Aiming, for example, can be a pain within cramped spaces, especially with mobile foes such as zombie dogs. Although the tension in the game managed to stand the test of time, the cumbersome controls and unintuitive and sometimes jarring camera framing do not. The controls and the camera, on the other hand, is where this zombie train goes off the rails a bit. Adding the ability to play as Albert Wesker in all his evil and overpowered glory after you finish the game is also a nice plus for fans. Overall, though, the game looks good visually.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t able to work the same magic on the cut scenes, whose blurriness make it seem like that out of place tie-dye shirt in your uncle’s wardrobe. Capcom does a great job in bringing the character models to the present while increasing the resolution of the game’s environs. The actual games also looks good for something that’s more than a decade old. It’s something I’m pleasantly surprised about, especially given the lack of the same level of tension in many of the modern Resident Evil games. Add an ever-present sense of desperation from your limited inventory of ammo, healing items and those darn save ribbons and the feeling of dread stays with you like an unwanted disease (I’ll let you pick which one). There’s just something about its gritty art style, the cramped feeling of its corridors and the way its undead creatures act and sound that makes you feel apprehensive while you stalk the game’s environs. One thing that Resident Evil 0 continues to do well is nailing the survival-horror mood even after all these years. Forget snakes on a plane, we’re talking leeches on a train. Chambers then runs into the abandoned Ecliptic express train where she runs into zombies, Coen and leeches.
